Work-Based Qualifications

What are Work-Based Qualifications?

Work-based qualifications, sometimes called vocational qualifications, are professionally accredited awards built around real working life. Rather than testing what you can recall in an exam, they assess what you can actually do in your job, using evidence drawn from your everyday practice and observed performance in the workplace.

They are available across a wide range of career areas and are built on professional standards developed with input from employers, industry bodies, and practitioners across each sector. That means every qualification reflects the real demands of the job — not an academic interpretation of it.

How Do They Work?

Each qualification is made up of units, with each unit covering a different aspect of a role or professional area. Assessment happens through the production of work-based evidence and, where appropriate, observation of you doing your job, rather than written exams or time-pressured tests.

This approach makes work-based qualifications:

  • Flexible – units from one qualification can often count towards others, so your learning investment carries forward even if your career direction changes
  • Practical – everything you learn is directly relevant to your current or target role
  • Achievable alongside work – because study is built around your working life, not the other way round
  • Nationally recognised – qualifications are accredited and regulated, giving them real currency with employers across the UK

Work-based qualifications are available from Level 1 through to Level 5, and qualifications at Level 3 and above can be used to support applications to university and other higher education programmes.

Our Awarding Bodies

Aim Higher Training is an approved centre for two Ofqual-regulated awarding organisations: NCFE and Innovate Awarding. We are fully compliant with all aspects of approval and adherence to the awarding body standards for both.

NCFE

We have a long-established relationship with NCFE, one of the UK’s leading awarding bodies. Our most recent External Quality Assurance visit from NCFE recognised the level of support we provide to our learners, the quality of our feedback, and the way we nurture individuals towards personal success.

Innovate Awarding

We are delighted to have recently joined the ranks of approved Innovate Awarding centres. Innovate Awarding is an Ofqual-regulated awarding organisation with a clear commitment: developing qualifications that reflect the real demands of the workplace.

Their qualifications are co-designed with industry stakeholders, assessed through evidence of real professional practice rather than academic performance alone, and built with the genuine pressures of working professionals firmly in mind. It is exactly the kind of rigour our learners deserve and precisely why we chose to partner with them.

Qualifications Available Through Aim Higher Training

As approved centres for both NCFE and Innovate Awarding, we now offer an expanded range of nationally recognised, work-based qualifications across the following areas:
For trainee assessors and Internal Quality Assurers (IQAs), as well as education professionals looking to sharpen their skills, meet sector requirements, and progress within their organisations. These qualifications are designed to develop the practical skills needed to assess competence effectively and maintain quality standards across a range of settings.
Qualifications for educators, trainers, facilitators, and coaches who want to develop their practice and gain nationally recognised credentials. This is an area where Aim Higher Training has a well-established and highly regarded offer, and our partnership with Innovate Awarding has expanded the range of programmes available to education and training professionals at all stages of their careers.
For aspiring and practising leaders who want to strengthen their capability and formalise their expertise. Our management and team-leading qualifications are available at multiple levels, designed for those stepping into leadership for the first time, as well as experienced managers looking to extend and validate their skills. Assessment is rooted in real workplace evidence, not theoretical exercises.
Timely, relevant qualifications for housing professionals navigating significant regulatory change. These programmes are built around the realities of the sector, co-designed with industry stakeholders, and assessed against what housing professionals actually do in practice. Whether you are looking to formalise existing expertise or meet evolving compliance requirements, these qualifications are designed with your working context in mind.

Designed to support young people in gaining the tools, confidence, and skills needed to move into employment or further education. These qualifications provide a structured, supportive pathway for individuals looking to take their first steps into the workforce or to return to learning after a period away.

For anyone aiming to work with children, we offer a series of mandatory qualifications recognised within both the childcare and residential childcare sectors. These qualifications provide learners with the knowledge and skills to work with children in childcare or residential childcare settings.

Frequently Asked Questions

We offer a flexible distance learning approach to completing a work-based qualification and each qualification is designed so that you can progress at your own working pace. The time it takes to complete a work-based qualification can vary depending on your own working pace and environment as well as the size and level of your qualification but on average we recommend 4 to 5 hours of study a week plus the time you action. The Guided Learning Hours (GLH) can be found in the Course Summary section for each qualification.

Work-based qualifications do not usually have any formal entry requirements, in relation to prior qualifications. However, we recommend you check the qualification you are interested in for more details as this will give you a good idea about what is required. To successfully complete a work-based qualification, it is essential that you are currently working in a relevant position in the sector you wish to undertake a qualification and that you are able to read and write English to a satisfactory level.

We will support your through our initial assessment process to ensure that you are on the right level of qualification based on your development needs and that the job you do must be varied enough to fulfil the requirements of each of the units within the qualification you choose. The mandatory units within each qualification confirm the tasks and functions you must be performing to complete the vocational qualification.

Vocational study is often referred to as ‘work-based’ and this means you should be currently working in the sector in which you wish to undertake a qualification before you can register and successfully complete the qualification. For example, if you would like to complete a work-based qualification in Customer Service, you must be currently working in a customer service role.

The job you hold does not have to be permanent or full time and there is no ‘time limit’ on how many hours you must work during the week and many of our learners have completed their qualification while working in a temporary or voluntary position. The most important thing is that the job you do must be varied enough to fulfil the requirements of each of the units within your qualification.

This is an estimate of the number of hours a learner will reasonably be required to spend in preparation, study or any other form of participation in education or training, including assessment, which takes place as directed by – but not under the immediate guidance or supervision of – a lecturer, supervisor, tutor or other appropriate provider of education or training. For work-based qualifications this can include hours spent working in a relevant job role.

We usually only offer work-based qualifications to learners based in the United Kingdom as the qualifications are based on UK national standards and some assessments are completed in the workplace.

You may however still register and work towards some of our qualifications if you are not UK based as you will learn new knowledge and skills and we will adapt our programmes to meet your development needs. However, please be aware that any  qualification your achieve may not be recognised in countries outside the United Kingdom.

We offer a distance learning qualification which can be completed in the workplace or at home. We offer face to face support sessions using online technology and there may be some workshops or group support sessions based on learner needs.

Your coach/assessor will keep you updated about the scheme of work or study programme and let you know about any such planned sessions in good time, so you can arrange to attend. Some programmes may require a workplace observation, and this will be arranged based on your schedule with your coach/assessor.

All the qualifications we offer have a total qualification time attached to them based on the number of hours it is suggested the qualification will take to achieve and this influences the time we assign to support our students. Work-based qualifications can be suspended on request for personal or other reasons and picked up again later. If you do not complete your qualification by the stated end date you may be able to apply for an extension although this will incur additional fees for coaching and assessment.

Unfortunately, Aim Higher Training and Development does not have access to any funding for work-based qualifications and we do not accept Student Loans of the Advanced Learner Loan for work-based qualifications.

Qualifications fees are usually paid on acceptance of your registration. We do however offer payment plans based on monthly installment plan which can be set up as a direct debit or standing order. Please let us know when you register for your qualification if you would like to use this option?

Once your expression of interest has been accepted, we will contact you and complete an initial assessment with you to ensure you are on the right qualification at the correct level.

Once you register for your recommended programme you will receive a welcome email with information about the resources and study materials you will use while on the programme. You will also receive a welcome email from your coach/assessor who will share their contact information and get in touch so you can agree a date for your first meeting.
