The Innovate Awarding Level 1 Award in Personal Development and Nutrition is a nationally recognised qualification designed for young people who want to develop practical life skills around healthy eating and personal growth. It combines essential knowledge of nutrition and balanced diets with the personal development tools needed to set goals, build confidence, and re-engage with learning.

What You'll Learn

This qualification develops practical knowledge and skills across three key areas:

Personal Performance and Self-Development:

  • Understanding what self-development means and why it matters
  • Identifying your own strengths, skills, and areas for growth
  • Using feedback positively to improve performance
  • Setting SMART goals and creating a personal action plan
  • Reviewing your progress and reflecting on achievements

Healthy Eating and Drinking:

  • Understanding what makes up a balanced diet using the NHS Eatwell Guide
  • Learning the purpose of each food group and how they support health
  • Understanding the importance of hydration and recommended daily fluid intake
  • Exploring how factors such as culture, cost, and preference influence food choices
  • Recognising how diet and drinking habits affect physical and mental wellbeing

Planning and Preparing Healthy Meals:

  • Planning a simple, balanced meal suitable for a young person
  • Understanding food safety and hygiene when preparing food
  • Comparing the cost of ingredients from different retailers
  • Practically preparing a healthy meal from start to finish

Course Content and Structure

This qualification is made up of three mandatory units, each worth 3 credits at Level 1:

  • Managing Personal Performance and Self-Development (20 GLH)
  • Awareness of the Importance of Healthy Eating and Drinking for Young People (25 GLH)
  • Planning and Preparing Healthy Meals for Young People (15 GLH)

The qualification carries a total of 9 credits and 90 Total Qualification Time (TQT) hours, of which 60 are Guided Learning Hours. No previous qualifications or experience are required to enrol.

How You’ll Be Assessed

You’ll build a portfolio of evidence that demonstrates your knowledge and skills across all three units. Evidence may include:

  • Written or oral answers to questions from your tutor or assessor
  • A personal development plan with SMART goals and an action plan
  • A reflective journal or statement on your progress
  • Leaflets, posters, or diet plans showing your understanding of healthy eating
  • Observation of practical meal preparation activities
  • Witness statements from your tutor confirming completion of activities

Your portfolio will be internally quality assured by your centre and externally certified by Innovate Awarding. A Statement of Authenticity, signed by you and your tutor, confirms the work is your own.
