The Level 3 Award in Education and Training (AET) is a nationally recognised introductory teaching qualification, previously known as the PTLLS. It is designed for anyone who wants to teach or train in the further education and skills sector, whether you are completely new to teaching or already delivering training and want to gain formal recognition.

This short qualification introduces you to the fundamental principles of teaching and learning. You will learn how to plan and deliver engaging sessions, assess learner progress, and understand the roles and responsibilities of a teacher in the sector. It is the ideal starting point before progressing to the Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training.

What You'll Learn

This qualification provides you with an introduction to practical teaching skills, including:

Understanding the roles, responsibilities, and relationships in education and training
Planning inclusive teaching and learning sessions
Delivering engaging sessions to groups of learners
Assessing learner progress and providing constructive feedback

Course Content and Structure

This is an introductory qualification assessed through written assignments and a microteach session (a short observed teaching session, typically 15 minutes). To achieve the Level 3 Award, you will complete 12 credits across units covering teaching roles and responsibilities, planning for learning, and delivering and assessing learning.

No previous teaching experience is required, and you do not need a teaching placement to complete this qualification.

You’ll be assessed through a combination of written assignments and a practical microteach session. Your work will be reviewed by a fully qualified assessor through:

Virtual or one-to-one coaching sessions
Flexible delivery tailored to your needs and work schedule
Regular feedback and guidance to support your progress

Your portfolio will be internally quality assured and externally certified by Innovate Awarding.

Do I need previous teaching experience?

No. The AET is designed as an introduction to teaching and is suitable for complete beginners.

Is this the same as the PTLLS?

Yes. The AET replaced the Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS) qualification. It covers the same content and is the current equivalent.

How long does it take to complete?

Most learners complete the AET within 3 to 6 months, depending on their pace and availability.

Can I teach after completing this qualification?

The AET provides an introduction to teaching. For a full teaching qualification, you would progress to the Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training or the Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training.

Is the qualification recognised by employers?

Yes. The AET is a nationally recognised, Ofqual-regulated qualification valued by employers in further education, adult learning, and training organisations across the UK.
