From Practitioner to Qualified Assessor – A Case Study

How one health and social care professional gained the confidence, skills and qualifications to transform her organisation’s approach to workplace learning.

Sarah had spent twelve years working in health and social care. She knew the sector inside out, the pressures, the people, the pace. What she didn’t have was a formal qualification in assessment. When her employer asked her to step into an assessor role and help grow internal training capacity, the idea felt both exciting and daunting.

She came to Aim Higher Training looking for practical support, not just a qualification. What she found was both and a lot more besides.

The Starting Point

Sarah’s experience was real and extensive. But when it came to assessment, she wasn’t sure where to begin. She’d never conducted a formal observation, wasn’t confident about making assessment decisions, and worried about giving feedback in a way that was fair, constructive and consistent.

On top of that, she was managing a full-time leadership role. Time was tight, and the thought of producing written assignments added another layer of anxiety.

She enrolled on Aim Higher Training’s Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement (CAVA), a nationally recognised qualification that equips practitioners to assess vocational learners confidently and compliantly in real workplace settings.

Our Approach

From the outset, we worked with Sarah rather than simply delivering content to her. We recognised that her professional background was a genuine asset, not something to be set aside in favour of textbook theory, but something to be built on.

Her individual learning plan was designed around her existing role, her schedule and her goals. Throughout the programme, she received:

  • Flexible online induction, workshops and one-to-one coaching sessions that fitted around her working week
  • Practical, assessment activities on one of our assessment days that made her learning immediately relevant
  • Regular, specific feedback from an experienced assessor who understood the sector
  • Clear guidance on assessment planning, evidence gathering and record-keeping
  • Access to learning resources and templates that took the guesswork out of the process
  • Ongoing encouragement and honest progress reviews so she always knew where she stood

We didn’t just help Sarah understand what good assessment looks like. We helped her understand why it matters, and that shift in understanding made all the difference.

The Outcome

By the time Sarah completed the programme, she was a different professional, not because she’d been transformed, but because she’d been equipped. She achieved her Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement within the planned timescale, with confidence.

Throughout the programme, she developed the ability to:

  • Plan and conduct workplace assessments in a structured, professional way
  • Carry out observations of learner performance with clarity and purpose
  • Gather and evaluate evidence against qualification standards
  • Provide developmental feedback that was constructive, specific and motivating
  • Apply the principles of validity, reliability, fairness and authenticity in every assessment decision
  • Maintain accurate, audit-ready records and documentation

The Impact on Her Organisation

Sarah’s qualification didn’t just benefit her; it strengthened the entire team around her. As soon as she stepped into the assessor role, her employer noticed the difference.

The organisation now benefits from:

  • Greater internal assessment capacity, reducing reliance on external assessors
  • Improved learner support and more consistent progress monitoring
  • Enhanced quality assurance processes and stronger compliance
  • A more confident workforce with staff undertaking qualifications feels better supported and more motivated

Her employer described Sarah as having quickly become a knowledgeable, approachable assessor who helps learners feel confident from the moment they start their programme.

“The support from Aim Higher Training was exceptional from start to finish. The learning was practical, flexible and directly relevant to my role. My assessor gave me clear guidance, honest feedback and real encouragement at every stage. I now feel fully equipped to assess learners professionally and support their development. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Aim Higher Training to anyone thinking about becoming an assessor.”
